6 Weeks to Breastfeeding Success Full support from the early days after birth
Being a new mother can be magical, joyous & exciting. It can also be overwhelming, confusing and worrisome. Moms need support, to be listened to, to be reassured & provided information. Breastfeeding can be a time of excitement, worry & overwhelming feelings. Let's work together to make sure that breastfeeding gets off to the right start and continues that way. We know that if breastfeeding can get to 6 weeks, it will likely continue for 6 months and beyond. I am providing a 6 Weeks to Breastfeeding Success support package.
I will be your breast friend with this package.
If you book this package while pregnant, we can have phone chat when you are thinking you would like your initial appointment and then we wait for baby to arrive. I want to hear about your experience with breastfeeding until now, your goals and hopes. It will be where you start your breastfeeding experience vision. This call will be about 30 minutes long.
If you book this package after your baby has arrived, you can go ahead and book your initial consultation to get us started!
Once your baby arrives, we begin our in-person sessions together. Depending on timing, I can possibly be there for one of their first breastfeeding sessions or within the first 24 -48 hours. (To be determined during your initial phone call.) We will focus on getting breastfeeding off to an optimal start. This will be looking at skin-to-skin, positioning and latching your baby to the breast, helping you and baby learn about each other and learn about breastfeeding. If there are concerns with latching we will employ strategies to lead to successful breastfeeding such as hand expression, handling a sleepy baby and navigating all the options and choices you may have.
The next time we see each other will be within 48-72 hours. (2-3 days later) We will assess how baby is doing, how you are doing, how your latch is feeling (nipple pain & preventing damage is a priority.) We will review position & latch, getting you more confident in your skills and your baby's ability. Gaining confidence in breastfeeding is the goal of this session, seeing how supply is coming along, handling concerns like engorgement, sleepy baby, maternal rest and nutrition, maternal comfort, partner concerns. This might be when you feel the phenomena often referred to as “milk coming in” or this might happen at the next appointment. (Hint: Milk is always there…there is just a sensation that occurs after a few days post birth). I will teach you how to deal with the new feelings and sensations and changes in breastfeeding when this happens.
After a few more days (sooner if needed) we will meet again to review things, assess how growth is coming along, supply concerns, pain, comfortable and build on the breastfeeding education piece. You might not believe that breastfeeding can change that soon after birth, but it changes daily for the first few days and weeks. This appointment is likely to be around day 7-10 depending of course on when we start working together. This is typically when the early feeding challenges may arise. You will be well supported in this time to ensure you get any issues and concerns remedied as soon as possible. If I think you need any specific products or feeding adjustments these will be suggested at this appointment. The goal of this appointment is to keep you motivated & encouraged to push through any difficulties.
After that 3rd appointment, you will have two more appointments to be used over the next few weeks, up until your baby is 6 weeks old. This time will be used to assess any strategies used to overcome difficulties, learn more breastfeeding lifestyle strategies & answer questions you might have. These appointments will help you master the art & skill of breastfeeding.
Any relevant handouts needed throughout your experience.
Continuous support for the first six weeks of your breastfeeding experience.
